How to improve the range of trams in winter

November 01, 2024

Here are some ways to improve your tram's range in winter:

Ⅰ. Charging:

a. Choose the right charging time: try to choose the high temperature during the day when charging, at this time the battery activity is relatively high, charging efficiency will be higher. If you can only charge at night, if possible, the tram can be placed in a relatively high temperature environment such as the shed to charge.

b. Extend the charging time: the chemical reaction rate inside the battery slows down in winter, and the charging time needs to be extended appropriately to ensure that the battery can be fully charged. However, be careful not to overcharge, the general charger can be recharged 1-2 hours according to the battery condition after the green light.

c. Increase the charging ambient temperature: If it is charged indoors, the indoor temperature is relatively high, which is conducive to battery charging. If you charge outdoors, you can use some insulation materials, such as thermal sleeves for electric vehicle batteries, to wrap the battery and reduce the impact of low temperature on charging.

Ⅱ. Driving habits:

a. Keep a uniform speed: Avoid rapid acceleration and sudden braking, and try to keep a uniform speed. Rapid acceleration will cause the battery to output large current instantaneously, and the power consumption will increase greatly. Slamming on the brakes wastes the vehicle's kinetic energy. A stable driving speed can make the battery consume more evenly, helping to improve the range.

b. Reduce high-speed driving: When driving at high speed, the air resistance of the tram increases, and the battery needs to output more energy to overcome the resistance, and the power consumption will increase significantly. Try to keep medium-low speed driving, speed control within the economic speed range (generally 25-30 km/h).

c. Reasonable planning of the trip: plan the trip before travel, minimize unnecessary detour and stay, and avoid long-term parking in low temperature environment. If the parking time is long, you can turn off some unnecessary electrical equipment of the vehicle, such as sound, lighting, etc., to reduce the battery power consumption.

Ⅲ. Vehicle maintenance:

a. Check the tire pressure: in winter, the temperature is low, and the tire pressure will decrease. Too low tire pressure will increase the contact area between the tire and the ground, so that the driving resistance increases, thus consuming more electric energy. Regularly checking the tire pressure to keep the tire pressure within the appropriate range helps to improve the driving range.

b. Maintenance of the brake system: ensure that the brake system works normally and avoid problems such as stagnation in the brake system, because the abnormal brake system will increase the resistance of the vehicle to travel, resulting in increased power consumption. At the same time, when using brakes, frequent braking and sudden braking should be avoided as far as possible.

c. Periodically check the battery: Periodically check the battery status, including the battery power, voltage, internal resistance and other parameters. If the battery performance is found to be significantly reduced, it should be timely to a professional repair shop for testing and maintenance, and replace the battery if necessary.

Ⅳ. Other aspects:

a. Rational use of energy recovery system: If the tram is equipped with an energy recovery system, make full use of the system when slowing down or braking, converting the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electrical energy and recycling it into the battery to increase the driving range. However, care should also be taken to avoid over-reliance on energy recovery systems that can lead to premature wear on the brake system.

b. Reduce vehicle load: Clean up unnecessary items in the car to reduce the load of the vehicle. The heavy load of the vehicle will increase the burden of the battery, consume more electric energy, and affect the driving range.
